China passes America in 2030 on health service coverage, and reaches 91 out of 100 by 2033.
Satoria's forecast
Satoria forecast for China: health coverage, on the WHO scale of 0 to 100 90.9 points out of 100 in 2033, up from 85.0 in 2023 - clearly higher. 80% range 86.1 to 93.4.
The World Health Organization publishes an index out of 100 for how much of the care people need they actually get. In 2023 America was on 88 and China on 85. China has risen since 2008. Our central paths put it above America in 2030 and at 90.9 by 2033.

China goes above America in 2030 on our central paths.
China reaches 89.3 out of 100 in 2030 against America's 89.1. By 2033 China is at 90.9 and America at 89.4. Both go up. The difference is speed: America gains less than one and a half points in ten years.
It asks whether care reaches you, not whether you can afford it.
The index is one level out of 100 covering prevention, treatment and care at the end of life. Money is counted separately, so a country can score well and still leave people with bills they cannot pay. For you it answers one question only: when you need care, does the system reach you.
The world got much better at this, then slowed down.
The World Health Organization scores each country on how much of the care people need they actually get. The world score went from 54 to 71 between 2000 and 2023. Then progress fell to a third of its earlier speed, and about 4.6 billion people were still not fully covered.
Where does China land in 2033?
China went from 71 out of 100 in 2008 to 85 in 2023. America went from 83 to 88 over the same years, and sat on 87 from 2015 to 2021 without moving. Move the slider to where you think our model puts China ten years on.
The two ranges sit almost on top of each other.
In 2033 China's published range runs from 86.1 to 93.4 out of 100 and America's from 86.3 to 92.3. Most of the world's gain since 2000 came from controlling infections, and care for long term illness reached only 61 index points in 2023.
2030 is the year to check.
Our central paths put China at 89.3 out of 100 that year and America at 89.1. A quarter of a point is nothing, so one reading proves little. What matters is whether America's line starts moving again, and we will record either answer.
What the score measures
The World Health Organization gives every country one number out of 100 for how much of the health care people need they actually get. It covers the whole range, from prevention and vaccination through treatment and rehabilitation to care at the end of life.
It leaves one big thing out on purpose. Whether people can afford that care is a separate measure, so a country can score well on coverage and still send patients bills they cannot pay.
Globally the score went from 54 to 71 between 2000 and 2023, and about 4.6 billion people were still not fully covered. Progress in the years 2015 to 2023 dropped to one third of the earlier yearly rate, which is why the World Health Organization projects the world score at 74 out of 100 in 2030 and says the 2030 goal will be missed.
China gained fourteen points while America gained five
China scored 71 out of 100 in 2008 and 85 in 2023. America scored 83 in 2008 and 88 in 2023.
The flat stretch is the part worth noticing. America's score sat on 87 from 2015 to 2021 without moving at all, then went to 88 in 2022 and stayed there in 2023.
Some of China's gain is the easier kind. The World Health Organization says infectious disease control accounts for 52% of the rise in the global score since 2000, while care for long term illness has lagged and reached only 61 index points in 2023. A country that starts lower has more of that easier ground to cover.
What our model says next
On Satoria's central paths China reaches 89.3343 out of 100 in 2030 against America's 89.0717, so it goes above America that year. A quarter of a point is a gap you should not trust on its own, and the crossing could as easily be 2029 or 2032.
By 2033 our central path puts China at 90.8953 and America at 89.4493. Both countries improve. America simply improves by less than one and a half points across ten years, which is close to the pace of its last decade.
Two honest warnings. The published ranges overlap in every year we forecast, and in 2033 they almost coincide: China from 86.1248 to 93.4104, America from 86.3289 to 92.3465. And the model is middling on this series: on data held out from fitting and model choice, across 50 country series, its errors were 25% smaller than assuming no change. The newest reading is for 2023, so the first three years of the path are already forecast.
